What is Problem-Solving?

It is not concerned with the effective or quantitative aspects of a problem as such, but rather its practical application, especially in solving real-world problems faced by individuals in their day-to-day activities.

In its broadest sense problem-solving involves all of the elements of design and execution that result in a working knowledge base. 

In its most narrow sense, problem-solving can be considered as the process of identifying and exploring alternatives to solve problems faced by people in daily life. 

In a broader perspective problem-solving encompasses a wide range of activities that seek to improve understanding, reduce uncertainty, and increase the Bayesian statistical statistics of estimates based on evidence.

There are many ways to analyze performance including productivity reports, surveys of workers, and by simply watching the progress over time.

When it comes to problem-solving activities, it’s easy to think that there are basic steps in problem-solving and that once you’ve read the directions, you can then go off and solve any problem in your life. But what if you want to teach yourself how to be more involved in problem-solving? Let’s look at a few basic steps in problem-solving and see if they apply to your situation.

  • Awareness

To ensure that the process of problem-solving is as effective as it can be, the use of awareness is crucial. The better the awareness, the better the problem-solving skills, and the more efficiently people can deal with the issues at hand. Many different programs can help people improve their problem-solving skills when it comes to awareness.

One very simple way to enhance awareness of a certain problem is to create a bulletin board or poster on the inside of the room where you can look at it. Some people have trouble finding the problem. The best solution to this scenario is to use a sentence with I want to… and continue with but. This would help you identify the problem and become aware of it

  • Brainstorm

Brainstorming in problem-solving is a skill that all entrepreneurs need to learn. Brainstorming, as defined by Wikipedia, is “the process of arriving at an alternative solution to a problem by allowing one’s imagination to work through the possibilities for resolving it.” The more I read about this, I agree with Carol Atkins, who says, “Brainstorming is the process of using the power of thought to generate ideas and solutions to business problems.”

Many people seem to think of brainstorming as a time-consuming, painstaking process. It takes only a few minutes each time and can save you hours on the job. It gives you time to think of creative solutions and offers a unique advantage over your competitors. This means you’ll get ahead faster.

  • Decide

Both problem-solving and decision-making go hand together, however, success in one does not necessarily lead to success in the other. You could make intelligent decisions, yet still, fail the decision in problem-solving. You may be proficient at problem-solving, or even finding the source of an issue, and yet still lack the decision-making skills to take swift action and a successful outcome.

You need to know exactly what you are trying to achieve, identify your barriers, and then take steps toward achieving your goals. There should also be an elimination phase, where you identify and eliminate possible causes of the issue that are causing you concern.

  • Take Actions

it is important to note that problem-solving does not have to involve actions taken out of your control. Sometimes, simple actions taken at the moment can solve problems. For instance, if you notice that a person is acting irresponsibly around the house, ask them why they are being irresponsible and take steps to correct this behavior. By using this simple strategy, you can learn how to deal with people more effectively, without ever taking any sort of action out of your control.

This is scary for most people. When you are aware of your problem and have ideas to tackle the problem. All you have to do is take action so that you can get better results. 

  • Review and improvise if necessary

This step involves measuring your actions to your problems. Generally in this step, you would have dealt with the problem or may need another idea or strategy to deal with the issue. If you have dealt with the issue at this stage then well and good or else you have to start again from Step 2. Don’t feel upset if the solution didn’t work out. As you practice, would get better and better at it.

  • Shrinking Vessel

A Shrinking Vessel is a team-building and problem-solving exercise which is specifically designed to build team spirit within a working environment. The idea is that because the work area is smaller, there is a more direct link between team members and their tasks. The exercise works by breaking down an open communication channel between team members.

Instruction: Make a space on the floor and have your whole group (or a set of smaller teams) stand in that space. Then gradually shrink the space, so the team will have to think fast and work together to keep everyone within the shrinking boundaries.

  • Ad Game

The Ad Game is a problem-solving exercise for groups where everyone can collaborate and give ideas. You can speak in turns and speak your ideas or suggestions. The person that approves of the idea can chant Yes. This improves your communication and you come up with a solution for a problem.

This activity helps improve your communication skill and improves relationships with other employees for colleagues.

  • Egg Drop

Splitting up your reps into smaller groups to compete and strategize against each other can be a very good problem-solving and team-building activity. One example would be the egg-drop game. The egg-drop game is a very old game that is still used today as a team-building activity among companies. This game also promotes decision-making skills among the troops. As we know, decision-making and problem-solving go hand in hand. This problem-solving activity is best to facilitate Decision Making.

Instructions: Each person is given an egg and selects a random construction material. The task for each team is that they have to construct a carrier for the egg and keep it from breaking. Once you complete the carriers, drop them off a ledge or over a balcony to see which carrier is the most successful in protecting the eggs

  • Dumbest Idea First

The dumbest idea ever is a problem-solving activity where the participants come together in a circle and put forth the dumbest idea ever. In this activity, everyone is encouraged to think of the absolute dumbest possible solutions to a problem. It seems that the dumbest idea, or the one with the most “perceived value”, wins the game.

  • End in Mind

Many of us find it difficult, to begin with, the end in mind. We tend to divert our focus from the outcome we desire most, and we don’t pay attention to the end. How often have you wanted a particular situation to be different but failed to do anything about it? This game will encourage you to start with the end in mind and work backward. You will Establish key milestones and dates in reverse order.

In its most basic form, it consists of two people in a circle that are tied end to end with one person in the middle. This person can be anyone from a co-worker to a boss and can usually be given the task of being the ‘leader’.

Instruction: Starting at the circle, participants joined hands with two other people in the group to form a personal knot. As a group, they should try to untie the “human knot” by freeing themselves without breaking the chain of hands. 

  • Frostbite

In this game, the team’s leader is suffering from frostbite in both hands and is unable physically to help in the erection of the tent. Meanwhile, the rest of the team is suffering from snow blindness and as a result, cannot see.

Instruction:

  • State that each team has approximately 45 minutes to build the tent with all but the team leader blindfolded and that the team leader can only assist the rest of the team verbally. Also, state that you will be rotating the leadership so that every participant has a chance to lead.
  • Give each participant a blindfold (because the team leaders will take turns to be the team leader) and each team a tent.
  • Position the teams a safe distance apart and ask everyone, except the team leader, to lower their blindfolds over their eyes.
  • Once every team is ready, tell them to start erecting their tent.
  • During the exercise be prepared to intervene if a participant might be at risk of injury
  • Remember to rotate the team leader in each group so that every participant has a chance to be the leader.
  • Allow the group to say when they have finished; if everyone agrees ask them to remove their blindfolds.

  • Wool Web

Wool Web has been designed to encourage teamwork through the use of timers and friendly competition. Even though there are many different game modes available, the most popular one is the building game where players are grouped based on their building skill. These groups are made up of groups of four and are often competing against each other within a time limit. There are several achievements and bonuses included in the game

Instructions – 

  • Give each team a ball of yarn and instruct them to create a web using only the yarn. (Set a Time for Completion)
  • Switch teams around so that every team has a web other than their own.
  • Each team would blindfold one team member and teammates would give verbal instructions to unwind the web.
  • The first team that successfully dismantles the web wins.

     

  • Tallest Tower

One of the coolest team-building games recently has been the Tallest Tower Game. Participants work together to build the tallest free-standing tower with the resources provided. This encourages your problem-solving skills and communication skills.

Instructions –

  • Keep the supplies ready to build the tower. Try and make the supply equal for each team
  • Use the supplies (Paper Cups, plates, bowls, Pens or pencils, paper or cardboard, Sellotape or masking tape) to make the tallest tower possible within the set time limit.
  • The tallest tower wins the game.

     

  • What Would X Do

This game is simple to understand yet difficult to master. In this game, an individual would be given a small case study and would be asked to think about what he would do if he were in that situation. To keep the game even. Every individual would be asked the same question and there would be a time limit that would be assigned. You have to come up with the best possible solution to the given scenario. The answer with the best solution would win the game. Usually, the moderator would be the one to judge the winner.

  • Puzzle Solving

Puzzle-solving is the best problem-solving activity for kids and there are a variety of puzzles available on Amazon. You can purchase any puzzle that matches the interest of your kids. This improves the reasoning abilities of your kid. The time duration for each puzzle can be different depending upon the size of the puzzle and how complex a puzzle is. 

  • Group Drawing Game

Kids enjoy playing a fun-filled group drawing game. The whole idea is to take a group of kids and pit them against each other in a bid to draw the best picture that they can. Kids get easily bored and therefore to build their problem-solving abilities we must choose the game of their liking. With the right games and some imagination, you can all have a great time drawing together and have a lot of fun.

One game for drawing is a simple pen and paper version where all of you are given a similar picture that you can’t see, this is a good one to start with for your kids as they will be able to draw what they see rather than what you tell them.

  • Tic-Tac-Toe

The classic board game of Tic-Tac-Toe is known to many people. Although the origin of the game is unclear, the basic setup of the game does follow a basic format that has remained largely unchanged since then. This  game is been known to improve the decision and problem-solving skill of your kid

All you need is a pen or a pencil and a paper. Take turns to add naught and cross and see who can draw a line of three first. Kids will likely catch on to this game very soon and in no time will place their symbols carefully.

Alphabet Game is a great time-saving game for both parents and their kids. In this game, your child must draw a car shape with the help of the letters of the alphabet. They have to match the letter with the corresponding one in the same group as it appears in the given grid. The objective of the Alphabet Game is not just to learn how to write but also to get your kids to think logically and creatively.

Your kid must be able to identify the different letters in order from A to Z without looking at the picture. If you allow them to select a letter and click on it without judging the image, they will not be able to guess the letter. The team would then have to rebuild the structure in 15 minutes but only one person would be seeing the structure and guiding the other one about the size and shape of the structure so he can develop the exact structure.

This exercise is daily simple and we all probably do it every week in our office. The whole team would form a circle and define a problem. The team member would come up with different ideas for the given problem. The person giving the best possible solution wins in this scenario

  • Escape

Perhaps the only game that employees have the most fun doing and which improves their problem-solving skills drastically. In this game, a group of people would be locked in the room. The moderator would leave the clues to find the keys to get out of the room. The group that was locked would be given anywhere between 30-60 Minutes Max
